Mission Statement
Our aim and object is to present the ancient wisdom of the Vedas (the
world's oldest philosophical texts) in it's pure and original form
for the benefit of all mankind without regard to gender, race, creed,
nationality or any other temporary material distinction. Pure Bhakti
Yoga is the eternal science of the soul, and the process of realizing
our true nature and our eternal position, as part and parcel of the
Original Creator known in all the Vedic literature as Sri Krishna. By
the process of Bhakti Yoga we can attain true and eternal happiness
in our true home, Sri Goloka Vrindaban.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
In 1885, in accordance with the predecessor example of Sri Jiva
Gosvami, Srila Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura founded a society
called Visva-vaishnava-raja-sabha, or the Royal World Assembly of
Vaishnavas, for the propagation of the mission of Sri Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu (AD 1487-1534) who is the Supreme Lord Himself, and who
mercifully appeared in this world to establish the supremacy of pure
loving devotional service (pure bhakti) to the Supreme Lord as
intrinsic nature of the soul and aim and object of
human life and gave the method of achieving that goal.
In 1919, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada
re-established this mission, and the organization ultimately came to
be known as the Gaudiya Matha. In the able guidance of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati
Thakura, the mission spread all over
India, and tremendous preaching was accomplished.
After Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada left this
world, a governing committee
was formed to oversee the Sri Gaudiya Matha and its mission. For some
time, all the duties of the Gaudiya matha were carried out enthusiastically,
and the preaching of pure bhakti continued everywhere.
However, after some time the chairman of the governing committee, who
was also the spiritual leader, abandoned the behaviour and ethics of the
followers of Sri Rupa Gosvami. This deviation led to chaos throughout
the mission. Many left Sri Gaudiya Matha to make their own ashrams,
monasteries and so forth, and began to perform the processes of pure
bhakti there instead.
Under these circumstances, Sri Vinodabihari Brahmacari (later known as
Srila Bhaktiprajnana Kesava Maharaja) left Mayapura (West Bengal) for
the town of Navadvipa with some of his godbrothers. There, in the
neighborhood of Tegharipada, they rented a house and established Sri
Devananda Gaudiya Matha. From that base, they began to preach pure
bhakti.
After establishing Sri Devananda Gaudiya Matha in Sri Navadvipa Dhama,
Sri Vinodabihari Brahmacari began to consider what would he the best
way to re-establish the service to the innermost
desire of his most worshipful guru Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati
Thakura Prabhupada. He reflected
that the innermost desire of Prabhupada is the publishing of the
transcendental magazines and devotional literature which he, Srila
Prabhupada, established. Without that the welfare of the world is
impossible.
Sri Vinodabihari Brahmacari thought, "The devotees who were dependent
on Srila Prabhupada's mission are now roaming here and there,
uncertain of what to do because they have no place in Caitanya Matha.
Our sole duty is to organise them and again preach Srila Prabhupada's
instructions far and wide with the same enthusiasm as before.”
With this aim in mind, he rented a house at 32/2 Bospada Lane, in
Bagbazar, Calcutta, and also bought a small press. After a short time,
Sri Trigunanatha Mukharji Mahodaya donated his business, Gauranga
Printing Works, to him. Encouraged by this, Sri Vinodabihari
Brahmacari began printing devotional literature. Unfortunately, when
an early publication, Siksa-dasamulam, was composed, the complete
manuscript was stolen. Despite the setback, he did not become
discouraged.
Sri Vinodabihari Brahmacari and his associate Godbrothers established
Sri Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti in that rented house in Bagbazar (Calcutta,
West Bengal) on the auspicious day of Aksaya Trtiya in the month of
Vaisakha (April) 1940. Amongst the Godbrothers who were present were
Sri Abhayacarana Bhaktivedanta Prabhu (later Sri Srimad Bhaktivedanta
Svami Maharaja, who became world famous as the foremost preacher of
the mission of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in the western world), Sri
Nrsimhananda Brahmacari and Sri Sajjansevaka Brahmacari (now Sri
Srimad Bhaktivedanta Vamana Maharaja, the present spiritual leader and
President of Sri Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti).
This society was named 'Sri Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti' in order that to preach pure bhakti
everywhere in the world, for the welfare of all mankind.
Srila Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Maharaja (formerly Sri Vinodabihari
Brahmacari) left this world in 1968, after imparting his teachings and
blessings unto countless fortunate souls. His mission is continued
today by the members of the Sri Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti in India, and
in centres around the world under the auspices of his foremost
disciples Srila Bhaktivedanta Vamana Gosvami maharaja and Srila
Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami maharaja.
Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami maharaja, is the foremost spiritual
leader of the mission of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and his associates
in the world today. He has circled the globe on two annual around-the-world tours each year since 1996. His hundreds of lectures,
translations of important books of the previous acaryas, and
commentaries on the topics of pure bhakti are the foundation of this
web site. A more in-depth biography of Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana
Gosvami maharaja can be found
